The Usual Suspects Top The List

A couple of classic costumes lead the way when it comes to the top California Halloween costumes this year. The ever-popular princess and witch received over ten percent more search volume than any other costume idea. Per the National Retail Federation, witch has been the country’s most popular adult costume every year since 2005, while princess annually lands in the top three costumes for children, though its popularity has waned slightly the past few years.

Pop culture provides the next pair of top costumes, with the blockbusters Deadpool & Wolverine and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice clearly making an impact beyond the box office. Deadpool & Wolverine has grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide, exceeding the earnings of the first two Deadpool movies by over half a billion dollars. Meanwhile, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has already brought in $375 million worldwide despite being out less than a month. The film spent its first three weeks atop the US box office before finally being unseated by The Wild Robot this past weekend. It is no wonder why these characters are being searched so heavily by Californians given that level of smashing success.

The remaining top costumes mostly consist of other standard Halloween archetypes and popular superheroes. The lone exception is Wednesday Addams, which ranked as a top ten costume for kids last year and is still garnering significant attention now. The Addams Family character’s popularity likely stems from the Netflix series Wednesday starring Jenna Ortega that was released in 2022, along with a resurgence of interest in series executive producer/co-director Tim Burton’s work following Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

The National Retail Federation expects Americans will spend $11.6 billion on Halloween this year.
