Will the third time be the charm for Abbott Elementary? The ABC comedy created by and starring Quinta Brunson has been nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series the past two years, only to lose to Ted Lasso and The Bear. Should it win, it would be the first comedy from an over-the-air network to claim the award since ABC’s Modern Family ended its five-peat back in 2014.

Abbott Elementary, a mockumentary sitcom, is a story about teachers struggling to educate children in a woefully underfunded Philadelphia public school. Brunson has already won two Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy last year and Outstanding Writing in a Comedy in 2022. Sheryl Lee Ralph won for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy two years ago.

The Bear may be hard to top, though. After winning the Outstanding Comedy Series last year, it comes back with 23 nominations, which is a record number for a comedy.

Another contender is Curb Your Enthusiasm, the Larry David HBO comedy that ended its 12-season run in April. Curb has been nominated for Outstanding Comedy 10 times previously but never has won. Might it go out on top this year?

It also appears to be a tight race for the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama award. Sawai has been universally praised for her role as Toda Mariko, who serves as a translator between Lord Yoshii Toranaga and Major John Blackthorne on FX' acclaimed Shogun. The first-year show racked up 25 nominations this year, the most of any show.

Jennifer Aniston earned her fifth Emmy nomination for an Outstanding Actress Award. She won in Comedy for her role as Rachel Green in Friends back in 2022. Should she win for her work on The Morning Show, she would earn a rare double to win lead awards in both comedy and drama.

The likes of Staunton, Anniston's co-star Witherspoon, Maya Erskine and Coon face long odds to pick up a trophy at the ceremony, but never say never.
